Basic Unscented Summer Lotion

Basic Unscented Summer Lotion

This recipe is for those who want the most bare basic recipe possible. For those who don’t want a lotion with any fragrance and perhaps has many steps to their beauty routine, but wants just a touch of light weight moisturizing so they can move forward with their make up steps or beauty routine without the lotion interfering. This is also good for those who are highly sensitive to just about anything. This recipe is very light weight and will absorb and lightly moisturize almost instantly. Great for summer, persnickety kids, or light skin prep.

What you will need:

  • Water – This should be distilled water that you will boil to prepare before starting your project.

  • E-wax – This helps keep your oil and water together so that your finished product remains in the form of lotion and not a 4th grade science project of separated water and oil in a bottle.

  • Grapeseed Oil – One of our lightweight lotion staples. It has almost no fragrance nor color and absorbs into the skin quickly without leaving and oily build up behind.

  • Germall Plus – This a a much needed preservative that comes from natural derivative. All of our homemade products that have water as an ingredient can develop microbial life. We don’t want this so, so we’ll nip that in the bug (get it? bug not bud…hahahaha) This is a tested and safe preservative even for sensitive skin.

Instructions & Notes: If you were wondering the best way to make a lotion with the fewest ingredients as possible, this combination is simple and pleasant. Grapeseed oil really holds up on its own when it comes to lotion. Without the e-wax you won’t have lotion and without the preservative you can’t keep it for more than a few days. So here it is. Of course, you don’t need to keep it this simple, but you can use this as your base recipe and then include the additives that you like the best. You can also use this a s a base recipe and try to experiment with more unusual spices and ingredients that you don’t usually find in common beauty products.

Before you begin, the first step is to properly sanitize your area. Because this isn’t a soap recipe, it is important to protect all of your ingredients from exposure to bacteria before you give or sell it to another person. Wipe the table tops with a spritz of rubbing alcohol, and wash the bottles and caps in hot water and soap. Then wipe the bottles and caps down with alcohol. Make sure to wear gloves while preparing your recipe.

  1. First, boil the water. Allow it to simmer lightly for a few minutes. Remove the heat from the water and allow it to cool down.

  2. Melt the emulsifying wax in the microwave and pour the Grapeseed oil into the melted e-wax.

  3. Pour the oils into the water and blend this with a stick blender for a solid three minutes. It may look well blended in just a matter of seconds, but continue to blend so that the e-wax is completely worked into both the oil and the water so that your product wont separate once it had been poured into the bottles.

  4. Once the lotion has cooled down, add the preservative and blend this well.

  5. Pour into four 8 oz. Bottles. The lotion itself is a bit fluffy and the weight will be about 6 oz. However, you will need to use the 8 oz. Size bottles to fit 6 oz. of product.
